RESOURCE: Volunteers in Medicine (VIM)
Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures, and the CoVid-19 pandemic continues to be an extraordinary time of challenge for healthcare providers, and especially for free clinics.
But with extraordinary challenges can also come extraordinary opportunities, and we have heard from many of our Student-Run Free Clinics that the need to augment or replace in-person services with telehealth has been both an obstacle and an opening for providing effective and efficient patient care.
With that in mind we want to share about Volunteers in Medicine America {VIM) and a company they are partnering with to offer a telehealth platform that meets many of the unique needs free clinics have in delivering care virtually:doxy.me, a user-friendly, HIPAA compliant system. As described in an announcement from VIM America CEO Mark R. Cruise about the collaboration:
The founder ofdoxy.me, Brandon Welch, PhD, an entrepreneur at the Medical University of South Carolina, set out to create a simple telemedicine platform that any medical provider could easily learn to use from the comfort of their home.… VIM met with Dr. Welch and he was compelled by the mission and needs of the free clinic community. As a result, he has authorized thatall clinics may have free access to a Clinic account on Doxy.me. The cost for a Clinic account is normally $50 per provider per month, but those fees will be waived. All VIM America affiliates that sign our Participation Agreement will have access to a free Clinic account.
Each clinic account provides the following:
A system that requires only a device with a camera, a reliable internet connection, and a browser like Chrome or Firefox
An account that is branded with your clinic’s cover photo and logo
Customized training and support provided by VIM America’s “Telemedicine Training and Support Team” comprised of their staff and volunteers
Written guidance and continually updated FAQs on Doxy.me tailored to the practice environment of VIM clinics. Examples are a “Getting Started with Doxy.me Guide” and “Quick Reference Guide for VIM Telemedicine Visits”
Collection and sharing of best practices and promising strategies in VIM telemedicine care.
Access to free or low-cost computer hardware (e.g., laptops, monitors), remote otoscopes and stethoscopes for in-clinic visits, and more, based on need.
Limited cash assistance, subject to availability of funding, to help offset your clinic’s costs of coordinating telemedicine visits
The obligations of participating clinics include:
Assigning a team member to serve as the Telemedicine Coordinator for their clinic, and
Providing to VIM America data on their telemedicine visit volume, number and demographics of their participating providers, and patient and provider satisfaction
